How should I prepare for my spray tan session?

 Image

This is the number one question I get from clients when they book their first airbrush tanning session. Prepping your skin properly will help ensure that you get a flawless tan and that it will last long. Preparing for your session is extremely important and should never be overlooked anytime you are going to get a spray tan.

It is imperative that you exfoliate your skin the day before or even for a few days leading up to the Spray Tan. (not the day of) I recommend you use exfoliating gloves rather than a washcloth or loofah ( those do not do a great job) and refrain from a scrub that contains oils unless it is more than a day before your appointment. Oils can leave a film on the skin that can create a barrier and possibly block the spray tan absorption in areas where it is on.

Exfoliation is important so the skin can be a clean even canvas. I always compare it to painting an object. If you are going to paint a piece of wood you always sand it so remove any rough/uneven areas so that the paint will look nice and even. So with spray tanning,  if the tanning solution is applied on uneven skin, the older dead skin cells will come off first causing the tan to possibly fade poorly. Do NOT have any existing self tanner or an old spray tan on you . That would be like putting polish over an existing chipped manicure. It might look good the first day or from afar, but when you get close up it looks horrible.

Do any waxing or shaving 24 hours before. And remember..again, no oils, lotions, perfumes or deodorant the day of the tan as they can act as a skin barrier and cause streaking or percent color from being absorbed in areas .

Many people think that they should shower right before the appointment but I highly recommend not to. That is because when you shower,  the steam will open the pores and your body gets very hydrated. This can adversely effect the tan because your skin might not absorb all of the solution resulting in a lighter tan and can take longer to dry off. I recommend at least showering 4 hours before by doing a light rinse, with no soap or body wash (except on your armpits & private areas).  If you absolutely must shower before your appointment do not use very hot water, and again no soap or body wash and make it a quick rinse.

Now since you have properly prepped you will be ready for your customized airbrush tan. Enjoy your session and get ready to enjoy your tanning experience.

Spray Tan Myths

There are many myths regarding spray tanning. Here are some facts so you can realize that it is not as bad as people make it out to be. There is no reason to be scared to get a tan! In fact I am sure you will love it!

Myth 1- Am I going to look orange?

This is one that I hear all the time. I get many first time clients that are surprised that I did not turn them orange. Here is a fact…it is not the spray tan that will turn you orange, it is the technician. That is why it is important that you go to someone experienced. They need to be properly trained to know what level to use for your skin tone.  It is when they get “Trigger happy” or spray you with a solution that is too dark that will make you orange.  Before you book your tan you really need to look at the information on who is going to spray you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either! Ask them if they can custom blend a color, ask them if they have been certified and most of all check out their website. Read testimonials , look at their Facebook page and most of all look at pictures. Everyone can look good right after the tan due to the cosmetic bronzer, so do they have pictures of clients AFTER they have showered? This is how you can get a true idea of the developed tan.

Myth 2- Is it going to get everywhere and make a mess?

No. I come with a pop up tanning tent that has a floor. This is set up anywhere in your home and you step inside to get spray tanned. My compressor is very small and there is hardly any over spray and is contained in the tent. No nothing will get on the floor, walls or furniture. I have had my tent next to white couches and high end sports cars and not 1 drop got on anything.

Myth 3- It is full of chemicals?

Some cheaper and drugstore brands can be, but I use a professional grade solution. I was very selective in choosing my product line. The main reason is because I personally get sprayed every week. I did not want to choose a solution that contained harmful nasty ingredients!  Organic aloe vera, white tea complex, coffee bean extract and plant derived glycerin are just some of the hydrating ingredients. It is also Paraben free as well as oil and alcohol free. So it is important to choose a spray tan company that uses a good product

Myth 4- Do I have to be naked?

No! You can wear whatever as nothing. It is whatever makes you feel comfortable. Client discretion is a priority and want you to be as comfortable during your spray tan session. Most people wear bottoms so no tan lines are on top, but I also get clients wearing 1 piece swimsuits and tank tops.

Myth 5- Is the spray tan it going to be blotchy and uneven like a spray booth?

No, the difference is that I am giving you a custom sunless spray tan whereas a booth just shoots out solution. I also spray hands and feet lighter than the rest of your body to give it a natural look.  I can go darker or lighter in certain areas where a booth can not.

Spray tan trials for brides

Kimberly bridal 4

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life. You have taken the time to make sure your dress, venue and other details are perfect . So don’t forget to make sure your spray tan is perfect as well! That is why you need to plan ahead.

I offer trials for brides and I recommend scheduling it as much in advance as possible. I get many calls from brides that are getting married that week and want to get sprayed. I always say not all tans are created equal. Every blend contains different ingredients. Now…of course everyone loves my tans 🙂 they are great for the most sensitive skin and have a beautiful color…however, keep in mind a few facts:

Even if you have spray tanned 100 times, every salon carries different solution, All have different ingredients, cosmetic bronzers and fade. Just because you like one you may not like another.

A spray tan is a cosmetic procedure and you need to make sure your skin does not get any adverse reaction. If there was something in the blend that irritated your skin or gave you a reaction, would you want to mess up your pictures AND memories since your skin wouldn’t look it’s best?

Bride Maid of Honor

I customize a blend according to your skin tone and what level of tan you are going for. The spray contains a cosmetic bronzer so the true tan will be after you shower 8 + hours later. If you decide you want a little darker or a little lighter I can adjust it accordingly. If you don’t do a trial you are stuck with the color…like it or not!!

You can’t do a trial a week before your wedding. That is because a spray tan lasts anywhere 5-9 days. You would not have enough time to get the old spray tan fully exfoliated off your body in time for your wedding spray. People ask me “Can’t I just spray over the first tan?” Well yes…however I do not recommend it as you are not spraying on fresh skin. You will be spraying over some areas that have fading and some will not. You are not starting with a fresh canvas so the new tan will not be flawless. That might be OK to do in every day life but not for your wedding. You want to look perfect.

I recommend booking a trial a month or so in advance. This way you can get sprayed at least once if not twice beforehand. You would not want your makeup done by someone you don’t know the day of the wedding…so why would your spray tan be any different?
