Spray Tans by Perfect Glow Airbrush Tanning

If you have an important photo shoot coming up or modeling event you might be thinking about getting a spray tan. It is a great idea as a tan will always make you look thinner, make your teeth look whiter, eyes look brighter and help cover up many skin imperfections.

You might think of grabbing that cheap self -tanner and doing it yourself to save some money but I do not recommend that. Many self- tanners are hard to apply ( even with the help of a friend to get to those hard to reach areas) and can streak and develop uneven if you are not practiced at applying them ( Not to mention that dreaded orange color if you have a heavy hand and apply too much) Plus feet and hands can wind up looking dirty from applying too much product. So do some research and get recommendations for a professional that can provide a custom airbrush tan for your important shoot. Also take a look at their website and check out their portfolio to see if you like their work and read their reviews.

The great thing about using a professional spray tan artist is that we can customize the color according to your skin tone and the level of tan you want to achieve. It is not just 1 color fits all. We can also contour to enhance or slim certain body parts that you cannot do if you us a self- tanning product or even in a spray booth.

If this is your first time getting a spray tan I highly recommend doing a trial first if you have enough time. Unlike makeup or a hairdo, you cannot just wash a spray tan off as it will be on your skin for 7 + days. So doing a trial session first is the best way to go to ensure you get that perfect color. If you do not have time for a trial tell the spray tanning tech to do a natural looking shade to avoid possible disaster by being way too dark for your skin tone. A spray tan works with your natural tone, so if you are very pale (Think Nicole Kidman) there is no way we can get you as dark as Jlo and not have you look pretty silly. So just keep that in mind and let the trained professional select a shade that they recommend for you. Although there is Photoshop it is very hard making a bad tan look good! You can always darken with body makeup or bronzer if needed.

Make sure that your face has a natural spray. Two of the biggest disasters I see in photos is always related to the face. If you spray your face very dark and then apply very heavy makeup many times it can make it look orange or too much darker than the rest of your body. The other is when someone gets a spray tan but does not use a little darker makeup to match. This results in a tan body but a washed out paler face. And that contrast does not look very good. So remember if you are doing your own makeup you need to go a shade or so darker or use some bronzer.

So here are the answers to the important questions you need to know:

“How should I prepare for my Tan?

It is imperative that you exfoliate your skin the day before or even for a few days leading up to the Spray Tan. (Not the day of as many scrubs will leave a film on your skin resulting in the tan streaking or being blotchy)  Exfoliation is important so the skin can be a clean even canvas. If the spray tan is applied on uneven skin, the older dead skin cells will come off first causing the tan to possibly fade poorly.

Do not have any self- tanner on or any old spray tan residue!! This is a very common thing that I see and highly recommend you get all of it off. I compare it to getting a manicure. Would you want a new manicure being applied over chipped polish? (I don’t think so) So please have your skin void of any self- tanner. If not you would be combining different colors that can wind up looking very poor and patchy.

Any manicures and pedicures should be done before your tanning session. If you must get it on the same day as your spray tan session you must refrain from the massage. You do not want any oils or lotions on your skin as they will cause a barrier.

Waxing and shaving should be done at least 24 hours before your session, If you shave the day of, the shaving cream can leave a barrier. Also many razors have the moisturizing strips that will cause the spray tan to streak on the legs!

Do not shower right before the session. You may think that you are helping by having fresh clean skin. But what you may not realize is that your pores are being opened and your skin is getting hydrated. It might not absorb as much of the spray tan solution resulting in a much lighter tan. Also many soaps, shampoos and conditioners leave a film (even if you can’t see it) that can cause blotchy areas and streaks.

Do not apply any oils, lotions, perfumes or deodorant the day of the tan. They can also cause a barrier and if you spray over perfume that area can result in the tan peeling.

What do I need to wear?

Wear a dark colored swimsuit or undergarments. I always recommend going topless or nude as this way you will not have to worry about tan lines if you do not know what you will be wearing at your photoshoot.

How long until my tan develops?

You will see instant color due to a cosmetic bronzer but the actual tan will take from 9-12 hours to fully develop. You can NOT shower or get wet until that time as you will risk washing off the spray tan ! (no skin to skin contact either) If you do not have time to do that and need to rinse off quickly ask the salon about a rapid tanning option. This is a special tanning solution that many carry that will allow you to rinse off between 1-4 hours depending on the level of darkness you want. It might be a little more money but is perfect for those that have a busy schedule or do not like sleeping in spray tan solution.

What should I wear after the tanning session?

Please prepare accordingly. Many times spray tans are ruined because the client did not bring the right clothes to wear after their session. Bring either a loose t-shirt,button down shirt and loose pants or shorts. A strapless sundress is one of the best things you can wear. Do not put on any bras, spandex, jeans, leggings or yoga pants. No tight elastic around the waist or ankles & no socks or sneakers so bring flip flops. If is raining an umbrella does not always protect the tan. Water can splash up from your flip flops and get on your legs and heavy wind can still get you wet so long sleeves and loose long pants are the best thing for rainy days.

Custom Airbrush tan VS a spray tan booth

Many people ask me what the difference is. Well if you have used a booth before you know. But I wanted to take the time to explain why you should consider a custom airbrush tan

1) The tan will be more even. With a custom airbrush tan the tech is trainined and can control the amount of tanning solution that is being applied. A booth just sprays everything out & you hope that you are positioning correctly. When I spray clients I do not even need to use barrier cream. That is because I can control the amount of solution on the hands, feet and other areas that need to appear more natural. Also, the breathing factor is much better. You can breath normal and not worry about solution being sprayed out all over the place. With a custom airbrush the overspray is contained and the only time you have to hold your breath is when I spray your face. Clients also remark on how the tan is nice and even and not blotchy or streaky.

2) The tan dries quicker. That is becuase I control the amount of solution being applied. Many clients remark how they cant believe the airbrush is not wet and that they do not have to dry for long afterwards. My tanning solution is like a fine mist and most clients are good to get dressed in just a few minutes after the spray is complete.

3) I can customize the tan to be darker in certain areas. Do you like your legs darker than the rest of your body? Or maybe you like your tummy to be extra dark or your arms defined. I can do all of that where a booth can not. Everyones skin is different and certain areas of the body can be resistant to the DHA, so the custom airbrush allows me to spray extra in those areas for the client.

4) I can custom blend a color just for you. No more level 1, 2 or 3. I get many clients that need a color that is “In between” the basic levels. an airbrush tan gives you that special service. Plus it allows me to push the envelope little by little on very fair clients giving them the comfort of knowing that they will not look unnatural or orange. With a booth if you wnt to go darker you take the risk that the next level might be too strong for you.

5) Cost factor. I understand people are on a budget and sometimes choose the booth because it is cheaper. However my custom airbrush is only within $10 difference of a booth, and I always have packages to cut the cost and different promotions running on facebook. Plus I always give clients ways to save as checking in, sending me a picture or writing a review are all ways to knock $$ off your session.

6) Longetivity. My custom airbrush tans last anywhere from 5-9 days as depending on your lifestyle & how dilligent you follow post tan care instructions. Plus tan extender and proper aftercare products made specifically for spray tanning can even give you as much as 2 weeks out of one session! That is MUCH longer than a booth and I have heard from many clients that the booth tans only lasted 2-4 days on them. So right there alone you are saving $ from not having to do as many sessions and spray tanning can fit better in your schedule.

How should I prepare for my spray tan session?

 Image

This is the number one question I get from clients when they book their first airbrush tanning session. Prepping your skin properly will help ensure that you get a flawless tan and that it will last long. Preparing for your session is extremely important and should never be overlooked anytime you are going to get a spray tan.

It is imperative that you exfoliate your skin the day before or even for a few days leading up to the Spray Tan. (not the day of) I recommend you use exfoliating gloves rather than a washcloth or loofah ( those do not do a great job) and refrain from a scrub that contains oils unless it is more than a day before your appointment. Oils can leave a film on the skin that can create a barrier and possibly block the spray tan absorption in areas where it is on.

Exfoliation is important so the skin can be a clean even canvas. I always compare it to painting an object. If you are going to paint a piece of wood you always sand it so remove any rough/uneven areas so that the paint will look nice and even. So with spray tanning,  if the tanning solution is applied on uneven skin, the older dead skin cells will come off first causing the tan to possibly fade poorly. Do NOT have any existing self tanner or an old spray tan on you . That would be like putting polish over an existing chipped manicure. It might look good the first day or from afar, but when you get close up it looks horrible.

Do any waxing or shaving 24 hours before. And remember..again, no oils, lotions, perfumes or deodorant the day of the tan as they can act as a skin barrier and cause streaking or percent color from being absorbed in areas .

Many people think that they should shower right before the appointment but I highly recommend not to. That is because when you shower,  the steam will open the pores and your body gets very hydrated. This can adversely effect the tan because your skin might not absorb all of the solution resulting in a lighter tan and can take longer to dry off. I recommend at least showering 4 hours before by doing a light rinse, with no soap or body wash (except on your armpits & private areas).  If you absolutely must shower before your appointment do not use very hot water, and again no soap or body wash and make it a quick rinse.

Now since you have properly prepped you will be ready for your customized airbrush tan. Enjoy your session and get ready to enjoy your tanning experience.

Caring for your spray tan

So..You finally got a spray tan and you love it! Or maybe you have been getting them but they don’t last very long or fade poorly (You know, when your skin looks like a lizard…not very attractive!) But either way you want to take care of it so it lasts!
Problems most likely arise from not knowing the best tips to take care of your tan. Many salons don’t tell you this information (Hey, quicker fade= quicker rebooking) But don’t fear tanners!  I am here to tell you the best ways to prolong your beautiful tan and help it fade as natural as possible so you can get your moneys worth.
Now I know we all lead busy lifestyles and the last thing you want to think about when you are tired is to take care of your tan. But trust me, it is worth it. I have had plenty of nights with a little bubbly and just wanted to get under the covers..but I sucked it up and did my aftercare. And my beautiful tan lasted for a long time.
1) First thing is to moisturize. I am amazed at how many of my clients tell me that they skipped this step as they were afraid to use it! Moisturizer is your BFF when you have an airbrush tan. The tan is on the outer layer of your skin & proper hydration will prolong the exfoliation process. You MUST moisturize at least 2x a day. I recommend in the morning and the evening & use a lotion that does not have drying alcohols. I recommend using products specially formulated for spray tanning. They do not contain drying alcohols and have ingredients that will nourish your tan. Use a tan extender as well. This will add the DHA back into your skin causing it to last longer, But don’t overload as too much on some skin tones can give you an unnatural tone.
2) Avoid hot baths and hot showers & bar soaps. Those are the worst for the tan. Use a gentle shower gel

3) After your tan wait at least 24 hours to shave as shaving can cause fading. Try to shave only as needed & use a sharp new razor. I also recommend conditioner instead of shaving cream.

4) Exfoliating  or using any harsh salt scrub within 8-10 days of getting spray tan is a big no no!. So no loofahs or washcloths!

 5) Bug spray can cause your tan to fade

6) When getting out of the shower BLOT your skin with a towel. Pat dry and DO NOT RUB!

7)  Anti aging products that exfoliate or dry the skin, Accutane and Salicylic acids can cause issues. Antibiotics and other medications that affect your skin can also affect your tan.

8) Avoid toners containing alcohols or Witch Hazel in higher amounts.Look where they are listed in the ingredient list, if in the top 3 do not use.

9)  Avoid dove soap, wax or Depilatory hair removal products ( Nair, Veet, etc)

10)  Avoid any waxing, massages or any spa services ( no pedicures, just polish changes)

11) Avoid any baby oil, mineral oil or massage oil
